Why Your Vape Tastes Burnt and How to Fix It

That harsh, singed hit is hard to miss. If your vape tastes burnt, stop using it for a moment rather than taking another puff and hoping it clears. A burnt taste usually means the wick is not holding enough e-liquid, the coil has reached the end of its life, or the device settings are too demanding for the pod or coil fitted.

The good news is that the cause is often straightforward. A few quick checks can save a fresh coil, while knowing when to replace a pod or change your e-liquid helps prevent the same problem returning.

Why does a vape taste burnt?

Inside a refillable vape, the coil heats e-liquid held in cotton or another wicking material. When that wick is properly saturated, it creates vapour and flavour. When it is dry, partially dry, or clogged with old e-liquid residue, the heated cotton can scorch. That is the burnt taste.

Prefilled pods and disposable-style devices work on the same principle, but you cannot usually access or replace the internal coil. Once the liquid is low or the wick has been damaged, replacement is normally the practical answer.

A burnt puff can happen suddenly, especially after chain vaping. It can also build gradually: flavour becomes muted, then slightly peppery or dry, before turning unmistakably burnt. Acting at the first sign gives you the best chance of avoiding a fully spoiled coil.

The most common causes of a burnt vape

The coil was not primed properly

A new coil needs time to absorb e-liquid before it is heated. This is called priming. If you fill a tank or pod and vape straight away, dry cotton can burn within the first few puffs.

After fitting a new coil or filling an empty refillable pod, leave it standing for around five to ten minutes. Take a couple of gentle puffs without pressing the fire button if your device allows it. This draws liquid towards the wick without applying heat.

Your e-liquid level is too low

Many pods and tanks have liquid intake ports positioned above the very bottom of the reservoir. When the level drops below them, the wick cannot stay saturated, even if there appears to be some e-liquid left.

Top up before the pod or tank is nearly empty. This is particularly important with high-power kits, which use e-liquid faster and heat the coil more intensely.

The wattage is set too high

Every replaceable coil has a recommended wattage range. Pushing above it creates more heat than the wick can handle, resulting in dry hits and a shortened coil lifespan.

Check the writing on the coil itself or its packaging, then set your device within that range. Start near the lower end after fitting a fresh coil and increase gradually if you prefer a warmer vape. More power can mean bigger vapour production, but it also uses more e-liquid and makes burnt hits more likely if you vape repeatedly.

The e-liquid is too thick for the coil

VG, or vegetable glycerine, makes e-liquid thicker and produces denser vapour. A high-VG liquid can work well in sub-ohm tanks with larger wicking ports, but it may struggle to feed smaller pod coils.

Most compact pod kits suit a balanced 50/50 e-liquid or nic salt. If your device has small coils and you are using a thicker shortfill, switch to a compatible blend. Matching the liquid to the kit is one of the simplest ways to get cleaner flavour and better coil life.

You are chain vaping

Several long puffs in quick succession do not give the wick enough time to pull in more liquid. This is common when moving from cigarettes or disposable-style devices, where the draw can feel different to a refillable kit.

Pause for 15 to 30 seconds between puffs, particularly with smaller pods. If you want frequent use throughout the day, a pod kit with a larger battery, suitable coil resistance and easy top-up design may be a better fit than constantly pushing a compact device.

The coil is simply worn out

Coils do not last forever. Sweet e-liquids, darker flavours and frequent vaping leave residue on the heating element and wick. Eventually, flavour drops off and the coil begins to taste burnt.

A coil may last anything from several days to a couple of weeks. It depends on the e-liquid, power setting, device and how often you vape. If priming, topping up and lowering the wattage do not solve the problem, replacing the coil is usually the right move.

How to fix a burnt-tasting vape

Start with the simplest checks. If the burnt taste appeared after the tank ran low, refill it and leave the device upright for ten minutes. If the coil has not been badly scorched, it may recover after the wick has time to saturate.

Next, check your power setting and reduce it if necessary. Clean any e-liquid from the pod connection and battery contacts with a dry tissue, then make sure the pod or tank is seated correctly. A poor connection does not directly burn a coil, but it can lead to inconsistent performance that is easily mistaken for a coil issue.

If the flavour remains burnt after refilling and resting, change the coil in a refillable device. For closed-pod systems, replace the pod. Do not keep vaping through a genuinely burnt coil: it will not improve, and the unpleasant flavour can linger even after you refill.

Use this quick check before installing the replacement:

  • Confirm that the new coil or pod is made for your exact device.
  • Fill with an e-liquid ratio suited to the coil and pod style.
  • Let the wick saturate for five to ten minutes before vaping.
  • Keep the wattage inside the recommended range.
  • Refill before the e-liquid falls below the wick ports.

Burnt taste in a disposable-style or prefilled vape

With a prefilled pod or disposable-style vape, a burnt taste is often a sign that the e-liquid has run out or the internal coil is worn. Check whether the device has reached the end of its stated puff capacity, but treat puff counts as estimates rather than guarantees. Puff length, draw style and battery performance all affect how long a device lasts.

If there is clearly e-liquid visible but the flavour has suddenly become harsh, set the device aside for a few minutes. A short rest can help if it has been used heavily. If the burnt taste continues, replace it rather than attempting to open, refill or modify a sealed product.

Reusable pod kits offer more control here. You can choose the flavour and nicotine strength that suits you, refill before the pod is dry, and replace only the coil or pod when flavour fades. For regular vapers, that can be more economical than replacing a whole device whenever the flavour changes.

Choosing e-liquid to protect your coils

Your e-liquid choice affects both flavour and running costs. Very sweet dessert and candy flavours can be satisfying, but sweeteners tend to shorten coil life because they caramelise on the coil. If you find yourself changing coils unusually often, try a less sweet fruit, menthol or tobacco blend for part of the week and compare the difference.

Nic salts are commonly used in lower-power mouth-to-lung pod kits, often in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg strengths. Their thinner, balanced formulations are generally well suited to these devices. Higher-VG shortfills are better reserved for compatible sub-ohm kits and coils designed to absorb thicker liquid.

There is no single best setup. A compact pod kit with 50/50 nic salt suits someone who wants a straightforward cigarette-style draw, while a higher-power kit can suit vapers looking for more vapour and lower nicotine strengths. The key is making sure the coil, wattage and liquid are designed to work together.

When to stop using the device

A burnt flavour alone normally points to the coil or pod, but stop using the device immediately if it becomes unusually hot, leaks heavily, makes crackling noises that are out of the ordinary, or has visible damage. Do not use damaged batteries, pods or charging cables. Replace the affected part and use the correct charging equipment supplied or recommended for the kit.

Fresh coils, compatible pods and the right e-liquid turn a burnt vape from a frustrating repeat problem into an easy bit of maintenance. Keep liquid above the wick, give new coils time to prime, and replace them as soon as the flavour tells you it is time.
