A high-VG liquid guide starts with one simple point: thicker e-liquid needs the right hardware. If you have moved on from disposables or basic pod kits and want bigger clouds, a warmer vape and bolder flavour, high-VG e-liquid is usually the format to consider. It is made for refillable sub-ohm kits, tanks and lower-resistance coils, not every device on the shelf.

What is high-VG e-liquid?

VG means vegetable glycerine, one of the two main base ingredients in e-liquid. The other is PG, or propylene glycol. VG is naturally thicker and produces denser vapour, while PG is thinner and tends to give a more noticeable throat hit. A high-VG liquid commonly has a 70VG/30PG ratio, although 80VG blends are also available.

That thicker consistency changes the experience. High-VG liquids are popular with direct-to-lung vapers because they create fuller clouds and often feel smoother at the higher wattages used by sub-ohm coils. They are a strong match for dessert, cream, fruit and ice flavours, where a softer, richer vapour can suit the profile.

Filling them with a thick 70VG blend can cause slow wicking, weak flavour or dry hits. If you are unsure, look at the device packaging or coil specification rather than guessing based on how powerful the kit looks. Coil resistance, recommended wattage and liquid compatibility tell you far more than the size of the device.

Choosing the right nicotine strength

High-VG shortfills are usually sold as 0mg nicotine liquid in larger bottles, leaving space for nicotine shots. This is practical for sub-ohm vaping because high-output kits produce more vapour per puff than compact pod devices. For that reason, many direct-to-lung users choose lower nicotine strengths than they would in a mouth-to-lung setup.

A 3mg or 6mg final strength is common for sub-ohm vapers, but the right level depends on how often you vape, the coil you use and your personal preference. If you are used to 10mg or 20mg nic salts in a small pod kit, do not assume the same strength will feel comfortable in a high-power tank. Start conservatively and adjust only after giving the setup time to feel familiar.

How to avoid dry hits and burnt coils

Prime every new coil before your first fill by applying a few drops of e-liquid directly to the exposed cotton where the coil design allows it. Fill the tank or pod, then leave it upright for around five to ten minutes so the wick can saturate fully.

After that, keep the wattage within the coil's stated range and avoid taking repeated long puffs without a pause. The wick needs time to pull more liquid through, particularly with very thick 80VG blends. If flavour begins to taste dry, lower the wattage slightly and give the device a moment before trying again.

The same 70VG bottle can feel completely different in two kits. More open airflow creates a cooler, airier direct-to-lung vape with larger clouds. Closing the airflow down slightly concentrates flavour and warms the vapour, although closing it too far on a powerful coil can make the draw uncomfortably hot.

Wattage is equally personal. Higher power often brings more vapour and stronger flavour at first, but there is a point where the liquid tastes overly warm or the coil wears out quickly. Start low, make small adjustments, and stop when you find the balance that works for you. There is no prize for running a coil at the top of its range.

Is high VG right for you?

Choose high-VG e-liquid if you use a compatible sub-ohm kit and want a smoother inhale, dense vapour and a wide choice of shortfill flavours. It is particularly useful for experienced vapers who enjoy adjustable wattage and airflow, or for anyone replacing disposable-style vaping with a refillable setup that offers more flexibility.

Choose 50/50 liquid or nic salts instead if your device is a compact mouth-to-lung pod, you prefer a tighter draw, or you need a higher nicotine strength in a lower-power format. Neither option is automatically better - the best choice is the one that matches your kit and keeps the vape satisfying without unnecessary fuss.

A well-matched 70VG liquid, fresh sub-ohm coil and sensible wattage setting can make a refillable kit feel like a genuine step up. Start with a flavour you already know you enjoy, give the coil time to settle, and let the device do the job it was built for.
