High PG vs VG: Which E-Liquid Suits You?

A new coil that tastes burnt after a day, a pod that leaks, or a vape that feels oddly weak can often come down to one detail on the bottle: the PG/VG ratio. The high PG vs VG choice affects how an e-liquid feels, tastes and performs in your kit. Get the ratio right and your vape is easier to use, more satisfying and kinder to your coils.
For most UK vapers, the simple rule is this: high-PG liquids suit low-power pod kits and starter devices, while higher-VG liquids are made for more powerful sub-ohm tanks and larger coils. There are exceptions, but choosing around your hardware is the best place to start.
What Do PG and VG Mean?
PG is propylene glycol and VG is vegetable glycerine. Both are common e-liquid base ingredients, used to carry nicotine and flavouring. Neither is there just to fill the bottle. Their different properties directly shape the vape you get.
PG is thinner and carries flavour very clearly. It also creates more of a throat hit, which is the slight sensation at the back of the throat that many former smokers recognise. VG is thicker, slightly sweet and known for producing denser vapour. It feels smoother when inhaled but can soften flavour detail compared with a high-PG blend.
The ratio tells you how much of each base is in the liquid. A 50/50 e-liquid has an even balance. A 70VG/30PG shortfill contains considerably more VG. You may also see 60VG/40PG, 40VG/60PG or 80VG/20PG depending on the range.
High PG vs VG: The Practical Differences
The best ratio is not about which ingredient is better. It is about matching the liquid to the way you vape.
High-PG e-liquid: clear flavour and a stronger feel
High-PG e-liquids commonly come in 50/50, 60PG/40VG or similar blends. Because they are thinner, they wick quickly through the small coil ports found in pod kits, MTL tanks and simple vape pens.
They are a popular choice for mouth-to-lung vaping, where you draw vapour into your mouth before inhaling. This style uses a tighter draw and lower power, closer to the airflow of a cigarette. A noticeable throat hit can make lower-powered vaping feel more defined, particularly when paired with freebase nicotine.
High-PG liquid is also a sensible option if flavour is your priority. Fruit, menthol, tobacco and drink-inspired blends often feel sharper and more direct at lower wattages. The thinner consistency can help reduce the risk of dry hits in compact pods, provided the coil is in good condition.
The trade-off is vapour production. You will still see vapour, just not the thick clouds associated with high-wattage kits. Some people also find a high-PG blend feels too harsh, especially at stronger nicotine levels. If that is your experience, a 50/50 nic salt may give a smoother result without requiring a new device.
Higher-VG e-liquid: smoother draws and bigger clouds
High-VG e-liquids are usually 70VG/30PG or above. They are thicker, smoother and designed for direct-to-lung vaping. Rather than taking a short, cigarette-style puff, you inhale the vapour straight to the lungs through a more open airflow.
This liquid works best in sub-ohm kits, tanks and pod mods with low-resistance coils. These devices use more power and larger wicking ports, allowing the thicker liquid to reach the cotton efficiently. The reward is fuller vapour, a softer inhale and a warmer vape when the kit is set up correctly.
High-VG shortfills are normally sold in larger bottles, often with space to add a nicotine shot. They suit vapers who use lower nicotine strengths and want to tailor their mix. They are less suitable for most basic pod systems. In a small pod, thick liquid may struggle to wick fast enough, leading to muted flavour, dry hits or premature coil failure.
VG can also leave more residue on a coil because of its natural sweetness and density. Very sweet dessert or candy flavours may shorten coil life further. This does not mean you should avoid them - simply budget for replacement coils and keep the wattage within the recommended range.
Which Ratio Works With Your Vape Kit?
Device compatibility matters more than the bottle looking appealing. Check your kit manual, coil packaging or pod specification before ordering. The manufacturer will often state a preferred PG/VG ratio.
For refillable pod kits, starter vape pens and MTL devices, 50/50 e-liquid is usually the dependable option. It is thin enough for small pods, widely available in 10ml bottles and works well with 5mg, 10mg or 20mg nicotine strengths. Nic salts are frequently blended at 50/50 for exactly this reason.
For low-resistance pod kits that use mesh coils and higher power, such as many adjustable pod mods, a 60VG/40PG or 70VG/30PG liquid may be suitable. The key is the coil resistance and the manufacturer guidance, not simply whether the device is called a pod kit.
For sub-ohm tanks and high-power box mods, 70VG/30PG shortfills are the usual starting point. These setups are built for thicker e-liquid and more airflow. Using a thin 50/50 liquid in a powerful sub-ohm tank can cause leaking or spitback, as the coil absorbs liquid faster than it can vaporise it.
Nicotine Strength Changes the Decision
PG/VG ratio and nicotine strength should be chosen together. A stronger nicotine level creates more throat sensation, and so does PG. Combining high freebase nicotine with a high-PG blend may feel too intense for some users.
If you use a small pod kit and want 10mg or 20mg nicotine, a 50/50 nic salt is often the straightforward route. Nic salts are generally smoother than freebase nicotine at comparable strengths, making them well suited to low-power MTL vaping. They are designed for modest vapour output, not cloud chasing.
If you use a sub-ohm device, lower nicotine is usually more appropriate because each puff produces much more vapour. High-VG shortfills mixed with a nicotine shot are commonly used at 3mg or 6mg. Always make sure the finished liquid matches your preferences and use nicotine products only if you are an adult.
Common Problems and the Ratio Behind Them
Leaking does not always mean a faulty pod. If you fill a compact pod with 70VG liquid, it may be too thick to wick well, but using a very thin liquid in a coil designed for high VG can also flood it. Match the ratio first, then make sure seals are fitted correctly and avoid leaving a full kit in hot conditions.
A burnt taste is often caused by insufficient wicking, especially when thick liquid is used in a small coil. Prime a new coil by filling the pod or tank and leaving it for five to ten minutes before vaping. Start at the lower end of the recommended wattage range and avoid taking several long puffs in quick succession.
Muted flavour can have several causes: an old coil, vape tongue, low battery charge or a liquid that does not suit your setup. Before changing flavour entirely, try a fresh coil and confirm the PG/VG ratio is right for the device.
Is 50/50 the Best All-Round Choice?
For many adult vapers, yes. A 50/50 blend sits in the useful middle ground: good flavour, manageable vapour, reliable wicking and compatibility with a huge range of refillable pod kits. It is especially practical for anyone moving away from disposable-style devices and looking for an easy everyday refill option.
That said, 50/50 is not automatically the right answer. Choose higher PG if you prefer a tighter MTL draw and more pronounced throat hit. Choose higher VG if you have a suitable sub-ohm device and want smoother, denser vapour. There is no prize for using the thickest liquid or the highest wattage.
The most satisfying setup is usually the simplest one: select an e-liquid ratio your coil is designed to handle, choose a nicotine strength that feels comfortable, and give a new coil time to bed in. Once those basics are right, trying new flavours becomes far more enjoyable.
